Following the capital’s seizure by the Dashing King, every general in the Ming dynasty submitted and donated their fortune as tributes in order to escape for their own lives. Gold and silver piled up like a mountain in a matter of days. The Dashing King sent his loyal followers to conceal the treasure outside the Great Wall when he withdrew from the city with the goal of using it as a war fund to return.

A treasure box located in the Changbai Mountains caused three groups of people to start fighting in the 45th year of Emperor Qianlong’s reign (1780). The contents of the box did more than only pinpoint the location of the Dashing King’s treasure trove. It also exposed the past pertaining to the four personal guards of the Dashing King and the schemes and resentments of several generations.

Recall that in 1644, the Chinese rebel commander Li Zicheng, often known as the Dashing King, toppled the Ming dynasty in China. He was later compelled to flee the capital city due to an invasion by the Manchu Banner Armies. Later chapters in Jin Yong’s The Deer & The Cauldron (鹿鼎记) featured an appearance by the Dashing King himself.
